JPI-Ocean Projects Coordination Meeting

Last 17th of February, the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness hosted the kick off meeting of the four projects under the Pilot Action on Microplastics of the Joint Programming Healthy and Productive Seas and Oceans (JPI-Oceans). The main objective of the meeting was to promote the cooperation and coordination among the four projects.

EPHEMARE, led by the University of Vigo, is one of the above mentioned projects and aims at assessing the effect of microplastics (MPs) in marine ecosystems. Throughout the three years of duration of EPHEMARE, the toxicity of microplastics will be evaluated over a wide rande of biological models: from zooplankton to mussels, clams and sea bass, polychaete.

Three spanish institutions are part of the project consortium which is constituted by fourteen european partners: University of Vigo as the coordinator, University of Murcia and the Spanish Oceanographic Institute  in Murcia (IEO). Ten European Countries contribute to the 3.154.000€ of total budget of the project to which Spain is contributing through the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO).

jpioceansmadvir.jpgThe total duration of the projects is 36 months, being scheduled its completion in December 2018. During the project, the uptake, tissue distribution, final fate and effects of microplastics in representative organisms from pelagic and benthic ecosystems will be assessed as well as the rol of MPs as potential vectors of model persistent pollutants which adsorb to their surfaces.
